Panty & Stocking with Garterbelt Review – Capsule Computers

Panty & Stocking with GarterbeltStudio: GainaxPublisher: FUNimationFormat: DVDRelease Date: July 10, 2012Price: $64.98 – Available Here
Overview:There are very few anime which don’t take themselves seriously and even fewer of these titles end up being released in North America. Sometimes when these anime are brought overseas, they are adjusted for the audience, similar to how FUNimation took Shin Chan, which was primarily a children’s show and turned it into a raunchy riot full of pop culture references and more.
On the other hand, FUNimation’s most recent release, Panty & Stocking with Garterbelt, or better known simply as Panty & Stocking, doesn’t need any special adjustments. Instead, FUNimation has brought forth perhaps one of the foulest mouthed anime to come out of Japan and they have done so in uncensored form, giving the actors free reign with their dialogue. Does Panty & Stocking contain enough wrong to make it so right for your money?
Story:Daten City lies between the border of Heaven and Hell and because of its unfortunate location, the city is always plagued by evil spirits that take the form of various ghosts. The ghosts can come in all shapes and sizes and can cause mass chaos and destruction whenever they form. However the citizens of the city are not on their own, as two angels reside in the city under the eye of the local priest. Now if only one of them could stop having sex with anything that moves while the other is too busy eating anything sweet.

These two angels, called the Anarchy sisters are Panty and Stocking. They have been kicked out of Heaven due to the fact that their behavior is unbecoming of a heavenly being. To try and buy their way back into heaven they must destroy any ghosts they come across and receive Heaven Coins by making them “repent.” These two are monitored by an over the top priest named Garterbelt and are accompanied by their… pet like creature named Chuck.
Now while this may sound like a relatively simple story all on its own, that promises chances at redemption and plenty of action, it is far from it. The reason for this is simply because Panty & Stocking really never takes itself seriously as a show, thus creating some of the most off the wall and unpredictable antics viewers will likely ever see.
Panty is a nymphomaniac who would be much happier spending her time sleeping with four guys at once, while Stocking is a glutton for sweets who happens to love bondage, which seems to be trait shared with the priest Garterbelt. Throughout the series these two angels act like anything but angels, often causing more damage than the ghosts themselves, all while swearing like sailors.

With this off the wall style, there is pretty much zero continuity between episodes barring a minor closing story arc. Instead the story mostly follows a monster of the week type style with the Anarchy sisters screwing and eating anything that moves, then fighting against whatever adversary pops up to stop their fun. But you know what? This formula and style work perfectly when combined together, creating an unpredictable laugh-riot of a show that will be impossible to forget.
Visuals:Interestingly enough, Gainax began creating Panty & Stocking with a style similar to what they had called “American Animation” and then ran with a rather simplistic looking art style that featured the characters appearing with slightly pointy character models. However the art style found in Panty & Stocking changes abruptly from time to time, either dropping in quality to an even more simplistic style which appears to be mocking “chibi” comedy moments.

Along these same lines there are a number of times that the animation will take a drastic turn for the better, such as during transformation scenes, where the artwork will become extremely detailed and high in quality. While shifting in quality like this would usually be a detriment for a series, Panty & Stocking makes it feel like these shifts are also part of the series’ jokes.
Audio:As standard with a FUNimation release, Panty & Stocking with Garterbelt does contain the original Japanese voice track for those who would prefer it, though all of the rolled R’s and Japanese voice actors swearing in English can’t compare to what FUNimation has done with the English dub of the show.

Panty is voiced by Jamie Marchi while Monica Rial is handling the voice of Stocking and hearing these two go at one another and saying their outrageous lines is absolutely wonderful. Each voice actor has done a stellar job bringing these characters to life, and this praise doesn’t just end at the main characters. Even Colleen ClinkenBeard, Scanty’s voice, Cherami Leigh, Kneesocks’ voice, and Garterbelt’s voice actor Christopher Sabat have outdone themselves with this raunchy show.
The stellar voice acting of the series is accompanied by some stellar music as well. While Panty & Stocking may feature a rather simple opening song, the…

How Panty & Stocking with Garterbelt Spoofed and Celebrated American Cartoons

10 years ago, the legendary studio Gainax premiered its last genuine hit. This anime would immediately stand out against the myriad of other anime coming out in time in both its looks and its humor, and the team behind it would soon go on to form their own studio, TRIGGER. The show we’re talking about, of course, is Panty & Stocking with Garterbelt.

The anime follows angel sisters Panty and Stocking, who were cast down from Heaven for bad behavior and poor performance. Panty is a promiscuous but confident woman obsessed with finding her next hunk of man-meat to have a good time with, while Stocking is a cold morbid goth girl who only cares about her stuffed animals and stuffing her face with sugar and sweets. The two are now forced to work alongside Reverend Garterbelt to catch enough ghosts who feed on human desire so they can one day return to Heaven.

The show is packed with references to Western cartoons. The Comedy Central show Drawn Together is often cited as the source for the series’s crude humor and foul language, but it goes much deeper than that. The anime’s use of sharp thick outlines, distinctive silhouettes and large round eyes are reminiscent of Cartoon Network shows from the ’90s and 2000s, most notably The Powerpuff Girls and Dexter’s Laboratory. The design and role of the mascot character Chuck also bear a striking resemblance to Gir in his dog suit of the cult classic Nicktoon Invader Zim. Properties like Ren and Stimpy and the fictional indie band The Gorillaz receive homages, and each episode of the show is divided into two 11-minute mini-episodes like a Western TV cartoon.

Any given segment could be about absolutely anything, from Stocking trying to lose weight to a zombie apocalypse to an episode dedicated to nose-picking. “Nothing to Room” stands as one of the show’s best episodes, carried entirely by Panty and Stocking’s dialogue. This bottle episode has the angels waiting all day in the living room for a special lunch prepared by Garterbelt, as the two get into conversations about their most recent club night, returning to Heaven, and reality TV. “Sex and Daten City” is also a favorite, with the aforementioned angels becoming celebrities but needing to go delete every copy of Panty’s most recent sex tape before their first feature film screening. Each episode is roughly self-contained until the latter half of the series. “Les Diaboliques,” the start of the show’s loose ongoing plot, is a particular standout on the action animation front, with the high octane fight between Panty and Stocking and the demon sisters Scanty and Kneesocks.

RELATED: How Well Does BNA’s Fantasy Racism Allegory Work?

The show is also infamous for its troll-y ending. After the credits roll in the finale, Panty, Stocking, Brief and Garterbelt all return to the chapel, only for Stocking to attack Panty out of nowhere with her sword, slicing her into bite-sized pieces. Stocking reveals she’s actually a demon. Afterward, Corset reemerges, and he and Stocking leave the perverse men in complete disbelief of what just happened. This massive cliffhanger never got resolved, as the series received poor ratings in Japan and the crew behind it moved on to form TRIGGER only a few years later. During a Reddit AMA, when series writer Hiromi Wakabayashi was asked if he’d ever make a second season of PSG, he said he and other staff members would love to, but because it’s still owned by Gainax, it would be very difficult.

Still, as troll-y and out of nowhere the ending to PSG is, it’s so in line with such an off-the-wall and chaotic series. It’s a shame such a one-of-a-kind anime never got its second season, but despite it, Panty and Stocking with Garterbelt is still remembered today as one of the all-time best anime of the 2010s, which echoes of its style appearing in other TRIGGER anime like Kill la Kill and Promare.

Studio Trigger Reveals New Panty & Stocking with Garterbelt Project – News

Original 13-episode series from GAINAX premiered in 2010

Studio Trigger announced at its panel at Anime Expo on Saturday that it is working on a new project for the Panty & Stocking with Garterbelt franchise. The staff at the panel showed a short video featuring an animated shot and text with the phrase “NEW PANTY & STOCKING.” The videos featured the main characters each posing with both their middle fingers up.

The 13-episode anime originally aired in 2010. Funimation released the anime on home video in 2012, 2013, 2014, and 2019.

Hiroyuki Imaishi directed the anime at GAINAX. Geek Fleet was in charge of series composition, and the music featured songs from Teddyloid, Booty Bronx, Taku Takahashi, and more. Atsushi Nishigori was in charge of the character design.

The Gainax West anime studio had teased a new project for the anime in 2016, and later revealed a “new product” and exhibition for the franchise.

New Panty & Stocking With Garterbelt Anime Announced

The announcement and trailer were revealed during Studio TRIGGER’s 10th Anniversary panel at Anime Expo.

Anime Expo was full of surprise announcements, but none were as surprising as the announced return of Panty & Stocking with Garterbelt. It has been 12 years since the last Panty & Stocking with Garterbelt anime premiered, although this time it will be helmed by a different studio than the previous installment.

The Panty & Stocking with Garterbelt franchise is a crude, vulgar comedy about two fallen angels who were booted out of heaven for “gross immorality”. Led by their boss and priest Garterbelt, Panty Anarchy and Stocking Anarchy attempt to earn their way back into heaven by exorcising ghosts using their specialized weapons made from their lingerie. However, neither of the Anarchy sisters takes this task seriously.
GAMERANT VIDEO OF THE DAY
The 2010 anime was produced by Gainax, known for anime such as Neon Genesis Evangelion, FLCL, and Tengan Toppa Gurren Lagann. Hiroyuki Imaishi, known for working on both Gurren Lagann and PROMARE, directed Panty & Stocking with Garterbelt before leaving Gainax to begin Studio TRIGGER, who will be taking over the series.

The announcement and trailer were revealed during Studio TRIGGER’s 10th Anniversary panel. The trailer, which at this time is still exclusive to Anime Expo and has not been released to the public, has been reported to have the text “NEW PANTY & STOCKING” alongside a quick animation of the Anarchy Sisters.

The anime has been a long time coming, as the project was originally announced by Gianax back in 2016 through a tweet on their website. However, most who were involved in the project left to join Studio TRIGGER, so the project remained in limbo until this year. The announcement tweet showed silhouettes of the angel sisters, with the promise of another announcement to come soon.

It has not yet been confirmed by Studio TRIGGER if this anime will be a sequel to the series or a total reboot. The original English voice actors for both Panty and Stocking responded to tweets announcing the series but have not confirmed whether they will be returning to the franchise or not. It is also not confirmed what staff will be working on the series yet.

The Long History of Fishnet Stockings

In the few past month alone, Kendall Jenner has worn fishnets paired with clear boots, while Sarah Jessica Parker opted for a pair of statement-making white hosiery. Kate Moss teamed a classic black fishnet stocking with a mini dress. Meanwhile, on the runway, labels like Margiela, Jeremy Scott and Antonio Marras have been reinventing the open, woven stocking into tops and gowns. Why is everyone suddenly gravitating to the shocking style?
Fishnets hold a unique place in fashion—they conceal and reveal at once. Unlike a pair of thick black tights that serve as an item of practicality more than anything else, fishnet stockings eschew utilitarianism and offer up something a bit more paradoxical.
In her essays ‘Holes in the Soul’ for CR Fashion Book, fashion historian Valerie Steele wrote, “The term ‘fishnet,’ meaning a loosely woven fabric, was in use by the early 1880s, but The Oxford English Dictionary dates the use of ‘fishnet stockings’ to 1933.” This timeframe makes sense, given the idea that most women did not expose their legs at all in public until the end of the Victorian era.
Others point to one of Aesop’s fables from the 1900s which alludes to a similar style of modern day fishnets. In The Peasant’s Wise Daughter, the king asks the peasant’s daughter to “Come to me not clothed, not naked, not riding.” She solves the riddle by arriving in a fisherman’s net.
Actress Anne Hart in 1959, rocking her fishnets. Edward Miller/Keystone/Hulton Archive/Getty ImagesThe iconic burlesque entertainer Gypsy Rose Lee often wore fishnet stockings during her performances in the 1930s and 1940s. Just a few years later, pin-ups Bettie Page and Jayne Mansfield would become as well-known for their striking 1950s centerfolds as they would for their personal style: lots of fishnets, sheer fabrics and bikini tops.
However, fishnet-style leg coverings or garments may have been worn during a much earlier date. “In our book, She’s Got Leg: A History of Hemlines and Fashion, my co-author Jane Merrill and I have an image of a jar from the Walter’s Art Museum in Baltimore which dates back to 1500-1520 A.D. that shows a woman with calf-high stockings that look very similar to modern day fishnets,” says fashion historian Keren Ben-Horin. “They were knit-like contemporary stockings but probably looped or woven to create the pattern.”
Fast forward to a more modern approach to wearing the storied style: the fishnet has long been favored by models, movie stars and the women of Hollywood, likely because of its glamorous lines and lack of practicality. During the 1950s, Elizabeth Taylor appeared in portraits wearing fishnet stockings with bodysuits and dresses. Interestingly enough, Audrey Hepburn and Brigitte Bardot—both actresses who were also trained as ballerinas—also wore fishnet stockings during this decade.
A model from 1967 in fishnet tights. Getty ImagesJust 20 years later, the way women wore fishnets would change again. The traditional, small diamond-net styles expanded and were modified to fit in with punk culture. Rips within the holes were made with intent and purpose; designers during the time supported the very same vision. “Jean Paul Gaultier and Vivienne Westwood went on to become established, respected, and followed high-end designers, and they peppered their style with these touches of punk, these elements that alluded to sex– blurring gender lines like fishnets,” said Ben-Horin. “I think a lot of the meanings we ascribe to fishnets today, that wild, untamed sexiness, a kind of empowered femininity comes from these designers and the subcultures that influenced their work.”

Today, nearly six decades after the fishnet stocking made its mainstream debut, the world–and the it-girls of Instagram–are still captivated by it.

What’s the Big Deal About Panty & Stocking with Garterbelt? – This Week in Anime

Over a decade after its initial run, Trigger is picking up the Panty & Stocking with Garterbelt anime for a sequel. But what separates this series from other anime? Two words: Unapologetic crudeness.

This series is streaming on Crunchyroll

Nick

Chris, I’d like to welcome you to the TWIA team. And as it’s somehow become a tradition for us to jump in new members with something horny that is tangentially related to their interests, I figure what better place to start than a show that gave us Fucky Transformers?

Chris

Turns out the crew that would go on to give us a whole series starring Transformers gijinkas knew exactly what I wanted even back in the ancient past of 2010.

Yep, somehow against all odds, the Half-Life 3 of anime sequels was announce a Trigger’s big Anime Expo panel. Which gave us a nice excuse to revisit that crew’s last big hurrah before they left Gainax from way back at the turn of the last decade.

And if any of our readers have never heard of this one, do not let the Hi Hi Puffy Ami Yumi aesthetic trick you. This column’s probably gonna need age gating for a very good reason.

Amazing that a show that seemed tailor-made for Adult Swim probably has enough content in its dialogue and action that it would have been too spicy to air on Adult Swim.

Seriously though, do not read this on your work’s wi-fi. Even the visualized sound effects are enough to get you called into HR.

Meanwhile, we’re combing through these episodes getting screenshots of the frames of those characteristic criminal captions specifically FOR work. This is a series that supposedly has over 400 swear words over the course of its script, and while I don’t think we need to match that level in column form, readers will definitely be getting a taste of that salty language.

As well as a taste of salty…other things.

Yeah, so if you’re new to Hiroyuki Imaishi, or only know his work through (relatively) more restrained recent stuff like Promare, just know this show is essentially a distilled, concentrated shotgun blast of what defined his reputation among anime fans for a good long while. Panty & Stocking with Garterbelt is less a traditional television show and more an excuse for the rowdy house of Gainax to see how angry they could make TV censors. And the answer was Very.

The story goes that Imaishi and his Funky Bunch went out after finishing up Gurren Lagann, getting a bunch of drinks to unwind. As you do, they started throwing out ideas for what their next series was going to be, coming up with the concepts of the main characters ‘Panty’ and ‘Stocking’, and just generally getting as rowdy and raunchy with their ideas as they could.

What followed was essentially the biggest remaining names at Gainax playing The Penis Game with their boss’ money. And while it’s not exactly aged perfectly, it’s undeniably a unique creation that could only come from these creators at that particular point in their careers.

Imaishi’s “Sex and Violence at Machspeed” approach to animated action has always driven his ability to just go hog-wild at putting his id on screen in projects, and it shows in Panty & Stocking’s…unique kinds of content.

And the crew’s love of western animation and comics comes through in the visual style.
Do you get the idea that maybe the people who added this dog sidekick into the show enjoy the works of Jhonen Vasquez?

If I remembered anything about Invader Zim I would make a joke here, but the only part of that series still in my brain is just Gir saying “duty”. So here’s a giant turd instead of a punchline.

Which…pretty much sums up the effectiveness of the ‘humor’ part of PSG’s sense of humor, in my opinion. Even back in 2010, when a younger, more-easily-amused me got totally sucked into the show, I never really thought it was especially funny. This is a show that basically has one joke, and that joke is “What looks like a mid-2000’s Cartoon Network production has a bunch of swearing and boning.”

It’s an approach that effectively leaves you with the early spectacle of something like South Park (which the crew at Gainax were also noticeable fans of) but without any of the attempts at satire, and even beyond the parts that have since aged poorly, never made for the laugh-a-minute content it was so clearly shooting for.

I think by around episode five I’d started mentally calling it Nightcore South Park. It harkens to the early seasons of that show where they’d build entire episodes around “this is a talking piece of poop who speaks like a children’s mascot” and just riff on that, but PSG does that in half the time at twice the speed. Like literally the first half-episode it about the main characters fighting a poop ghost…
