CELEBRATE 2022 – Christmas was so confusing when I was a kid.
Take for example the poem “ ’Twas the Night Before Christmas,” in which it says “the stockings were hung by the chimney with care.”
Nobody I knew had a chimney or a fireplace.
And hanging stockings the night before Christmas?
We didn’t do that at our house.
But I knew about those special stockings. Fat and wide, made of plush red or green fabric, they were decorated with sparkly gold stitchery that spelled out “Debbie” or “Johnny” or whatever your name might be. This wasn’t some kind of fancy footwear. These stockings just hung around and waited for Santa Claus to stuff them with goodies on Christmas Eve.
Our “stockings” went up nearly three weeks before Christmas, on Dec. 5, which was St. Nicholas Eve. And we didn’t “hang” them. We draped them over an upstairs railing.
Oh, and these were REAL socks.
For Dad, it was one of the black stretchy dress socks that he wore to church on Sundays; for Mom it would be a single silky nylon stocking, the kind that clipped to a girdle or garter belt.
Mine was a knee sock, and in an effort to be festive, I’d select something colorful, like an argyle. Because it was the 1960s, I could have put out an electric green fishnet stocking but I didn’t want St. Nick to have to fumble with all that mesh.
Little brother? Well, he would just dig out a white cotton crew sock. Sometimes it was unwashed, pulled out from under his bed. Ewww!
The treats we found in our hose weren’t too exciting, either.

Mom was a health nut. She had a Dannon yogurt maker and didn’t allow us to drink soda. Our socks were usually stuffed with packs of sugarless gum, mini boxes of raisins, a ballpoint pen and maybe a dollar bill. If you were really lucky, you got a roll of rainbow Lifesavers.
Why did we do this? I recently asked my 91-year-old mom and my brother what they remembered.
Question: Why did we hang socks on St. Nicholas Eve?
Mom: “I got that from my parents, who came from Poland. My sister and I hung our stockings over the fireplace. It was an artificial fireplace. I can still picture it in my head.”
Q: What kind of stockings?
Mom: “I can’t remember, but I know they were real socks. Maybe it was a knee sock. And there were no stockings on Christmas Eve.”
Q: What did St. Nick put in your stocking?
Mom: “If you were good you got candy. If you were bad you got a potato or coal.”
Q: What do you remember about St. Nicholas Eve?
Brother: “My sock was definitely a white crew sock with stripes on it. Like a gym sock.”
Q: And the treats?
Brother: “Oh yeah, I remember the sugarless gum, Carefree or Trident. Sometimes I got a box of Cracker Jack. That was my favorite. I seem to remember some change at the bottom of the sock, too.
Q: What do you think of this tradition?
Brother: “I don’t remember any other kids doing this. And it’s not a tradition I carried on with my kids. We did more of the traditional Christmas-morning stocking.”
Ho ho ho, so there you have it. A family mystery unraveled.
P.S. — If you try this at home, do hang your stockings with care, far from the fire in the fireplace. Polyester and other Franken-fabrics are not flame retardant.
The real St. NickLong before Santa Claus there was St. Nicholas, an early Christian bishop of Greek descent who lived during the fourth century in what is now Turkey.
The history is sketchy, but apparently he was a generous man who liked to surprise people with gifts. According to one story, he saved three girls from being forced into prostitution by dropping sacks of gold coins through the window of their house so they would each have a dowry and could be married. Another story tells of a miracle in which he calmed a stormy sea on a ship bound for the Holy Land, and for this reason, in Greece and Italy, he is revered by sailors and fishermen.
The American Santa Claus and the British Father Christmas were inspired by the legends of St. Nicholas, who the Dutch call “Sinterklaas.”
Today, in many European countries, children hang stockings or put out their boots or shoes on St. Nicholas Eve.
In the United States the tradition was continued by German, Polish, Belgian and Dutch immigrants until the Christmas Eve Santa Claus and his reindeer took over.

Overview:Every company is concerned about losing money to competition, especially competition from overseas. This fear has recently caused quite a stir in the anime industry thanks to the fact that many Japanese companies are either afraid to sell the license to Western companies to release in English or make it so certain versions of an anime are delayed.
Such is the case with Panty & Stocking, an anime which was originally released on DVD back in July. The original license holder feared that anime fans from Japan would purchase the Blu-ray version of the anime for a severe discount from North America. As such, FUNimation’s Blu-ray release was delayed until the beginning of 2013. However now that the series has debuted on Blu-ray, is it worth picking up for those who may have waited or are looking for the ultimate Panty & Stocking experience?
Story:Daten City lies between the border of Heaven and Hell and because of its unfortunate location, the city is always plagued by evil spirits that take the form of various ghosts. The ghosts can come in all shapes and sizes and can cause mass chaos and destruction whenever they form. However the citizens of the city aren’t on their own, as two angels reside in the city under the eye of the local priest. Now if only one of them could stop having sex with anything that moves while the other is too busy eating anything sweet.

These two angels, called the Anarchy sisters are Panty and Stocking. They have been kicked out of Heaven due to the fact that their behavior is unbecoming of a heavenly being. To try and buy their way back into heaven they must destroy any ghosts they come across and receive Heaven Coins by making them “repent.” These two are monitored by an over the top priest named Garterbelt and are accompanied by their… pet like creature named Chuck.
Now while this may sound like a relatively simple story all on its own, that promises chances at redemption and plenty of action, it is far from it. The reason for this is simply because Panty & Stocking really never takes itself seriously as a show as the angels are more focused on sex and candy, thus creating some of the most off the wall and unpredictable antics viewers will likely ever see.

Panty is a nymphomaniac who would be much happier spending her time sleeping with four guys at once, while Stocking is a glutton for sweets who happens to love bondage, which seems to be trait shared with the priest Garterbelt. Throughout the series these two angels act like anything but angels, use their stockings and panties as weapons, often cause more damage than the ghosts themselves, all while swearing more than most people do in a year.
With this off the wall style, there is pretty much zero continuity between episodes barring a minor closing story arc. Instead the story mostly follows a monster of the week type style with the Anarchy sisters screwing and eating anything that moves, then fighting against whatever adversary pops up to stop their fun. But you know what? This formula and style work perfectly when combined together, creating an unpredictable laugh-riot of a show that will be impossible to forget.
Visuals:To say that Panty & Stocking with Garterbelt received an upgrade by being released on Blu-ray rather than DVD would be an understatement. The reason for this is thanks to the fact that Gainax’s bright color palette and mostly simplistic art style shine on this Blu-ray release. You see, while the DVDs may have still looked impressive, the series has never looked better than it does now on Blu-ray.

Even the most basic sequences appear crisp and vibrant and whenever the art style changes into one with more detail, these crisp visuals never miss a beat as the entire series, minus one half of an episode which features a real-life type art style, impresses from start to finish, especially whenever these two angels battle. While fans may be satisfied with the DVD portrayal of the series, this Blu-ray offering is the definitive Panty & Stocking experience.
Audio:As standard with a FUNimation release, Panty & Stocking with Garterbelt does contain the original Japanese voice track for those who would prefer it, though all of the rolled R’s and Japanese voice actors swearing in English can’t compare to what FUNimation has done with the English dub of the show.

Panty is voiced by Jamie Marchi while Monica Rial is handling the voice of Stocking and hearing these two go at one another and saying their outrageous lines is absolutely wonderful. Each voice actor has done a stellar job bringing these characters to life, and this praise doesn’t just end at the main characters. Even Colleen Clinkenbeard, Scanty’s voice, Cherami Leigh, Kneesocks’ voice, and Garterbelt’s voice actor Christopher Sabat have outdone themselves with this raunchy…

The star’s sibling Anthony Ciccone died at the age of 66 and the news was sadly announced on Instagram by his brother in law Joe Henry.
He wrote: “My brother in law, Anthony Gerard Ciccone, exited this earthly plane last evening. I’ve known him since I was 15, in the spring of our lives in Michigan so many years now gone.”

10 years ago, the legendary studio Gainax premiered its last genuine hit. This anime would immediately stand out against the myriad of other anime coming out in time in both its looks and its humor, and the team behind it would soon go on to form their own studio, TRIGGER. The show we’re talking about, of course, is Panty & Stocking with Garterbelt.

The anime follows angel sisters Panty and Stocking, who were cast down from Heaven for bad behavior and poor performance. Panty is a promiscuous but confident woman obsessed with finding her next hunk of man-meat to have a good time with, while Stocking is a cold morbid goth girl who only cares about her stuffed animals and stuffing her face with sugar and sweets. The two are now forced to work alongside Reverend Garterbelt to catch enough ghosts who feed on human desire so they can one day return to Heaven.

The show is packed with references to Western cartoons. The Comedy Central show Drawn Together is often cited as the source for the series’s crude humor and foul language, but it goes much deeper than that. The anime’s use of sharp thick outlines, distinctive silhouettes and large round eyes are reminiscent of Cartoon Network shows from the ’90s and 2000s, most notably The Powerpuff Girls and Dexter’s Laboratory. The design and role of the mascot character Chuck also bear a striking resemblance to Gir in his dog suit of the cult classic Nicktoon Invader Zim. Properties like Ren and Stimpy and the fictional indie band The Gorillaz receive homages, and each episode of the show is divided into two 11-minute mini-episodes like a Western TV cartoon.

Any given segment could be about absolutely anything, from Stocking trying to lose weight to a zombie apocalypse to an episode dedicated to nose-picking. “Nothing to Room” stands as one of the show’s best episodes, carried entirely by Panty and Stocking’s dialogue. This bottle episode has the angels waiting all day in the living room for a special lunch prepared by Garterbelt, as the two get into conversations about their most recent club night, returning to Heaven, and reality TV. “Sex and Daten City” is also a favorite, with the aforementioned angels becoming celebrities but needing to go delete every copy of Panty’s most recent sex tape before their first feature film screening. Each episode is roughly self-contained until the latter half of the series. “Les Diaboliques,” the start of the show’s loose ongoing plot, is a particular standout on the action animation front, with the high octane fight between Panty and Stocking and the demon sisters Scanty and Kneesocks.

The show is also infamous for its troll-y ending. After the credits roll in the finale, Panty, Stocking, Brief and Garterbelt all return to the chapel, only for Stocking to attack Panty out of nowhere with her sword, slicing her into bite-sized pieces. Stocking reveals she’s actually a demon. Afterward, Corset reemerges, and he and Stocking leave the perverse men in complete disbelief of what just happened. This massive cliffhanger never got resolved, as the series received poor ratings in Japan and the crew behind it moved on to form TRIGGER only a few years later. During a Reddit AMA, when series writer Hiromi Wakabayashi was asked if he’d ever make a second season of PSG, he said he and other staff members would love to, but because it’s still owned by Gainax, it would be very difficult.

Still, as troll-y and out of nowhere the ending to PSG is, it’s so in line with such an off-the-wall and chaotic series. It’s a shame such a one-of-a-kind anime never got its second season, but despite it, Panty and Stocking with Garterbelt is still remembered today as one of the all-time best anime of the 2010s, which echoes of its style appearing in other TRIGGER anime like Kill la Kill and Promare.

Studio Trigger revealed at its Anime Expo 2022 panel on July 2 a season 2 for Panty & Stocking With Garterbelt, as reported by @VamptVo. A new project was technically already announced back in 2016 but with no news since then. The reveal included a short trailer which should be soon officially uploaded.

Produced by Gainax and directed by Hiroyuki Imaishi (Kill La Kill), Panty & Stocking With Garterbelt was first aired from October 1 to December 24, 2010. The comedy series follows two fallen angels turned demon hunters, the promiscuous Panty and the nonchalant Stocking, both following orders from Garterbelt, an afro priest.

It’s quite hard to describe what made Panty & Stocking memorable to those who didn’t live through it. The series mixed in different gimmicks or sometimes a different approach to animation altogether. The original soundtrack by several composers, most notably Fly Away by TeddyLoid, was also one of the series’ strongest points.

Personally speaking, I believe it was an unbalanced series, with certain episodes or scenes being much more memorable than others. In the now obsolete era of anime blogs, a certain Kurogane once summarized Panty & Stocking With Garterbelt as “Too experimental, even for Gainax” and I still share that sentiment 12 years later.

With that said, Panty & Stocking is definitely worth watching as long as you don’t mind its crude humor and imagery. If you like Studio Trigger and Imaishi’s stuff, and if you enjoy Studio Trigger’s more niche and experimental series like Turning Girls or Inferno Cop, I’m sure you’ll love Panty & Stocking.

A Quick History Of Studio Trigger And Its Gainax Origins
Panty And Stocking With Garterbelt’s director Hiroyuki Imaishi left Gainax in 2011 with several other members, to form Studio Trigger. This included Panty & Stocking scriptwriter Masahiko Otsuka and producer Kazuya Masumoto. Having lost most of its talent, Gainax has barely done anything since then, but still held the rights for the series.

The situation finally changed in 2020 as Studio Trigger got the rights for Panty And Stocking With Garterbelt and Gurren Lagann, and has now officially announced more PSG. This is an incredibly exciting announcement and a dream come true for anime fans who’ve been following the medium since the late 2000s. I can’t wait to see what this new anime will look like.

Baywatch star Carmen Electra looked ageless as ever as she poured her lithe frame into a teeny set of fishnet stockings and suspenders.
Carmen took to Instagram this week to share a stunning throwback snap which saw her dress up as a member of the Pussycat Dolls in nothing but a racy set of underwear.

Carmen performed with the girl band back in the early 2000s – back when the band, choreographed by Robin Antin, was still a burlesque act.

Leaving her toned tummy and washboard abs on full display, Carmen slipped into a pair of netted stockings which rose to her mid-thigh, kept up by a pair of black and red lacy suspenders.

Her tiny black knickers had the word DOLL emblazoned over the front in silver sequins, plus a ruffle of red lace at either side as Carmen posed up a storm with her toned legs front and centre.
She added a black lace bra to her ensemble, with cute bows gathered at the base of the thin straps, and added a pair of black mesh gloves to rake her hands through her waist-length brunette hair.

An upper arm bracelet and silver earrings glinting at her lobes finished off the ensemble, while Carmen painted her lips in a pale pink gloss and lined her eyes with dark liner.

The star simply captioned her snap: “Dolls” on Instagram as fans raced to the comments section.
One eager social media user said: “Can I ask for you for Christmas?” as another echoed: “My dream woman! A delight to the eye, so beautiful.”
“Sexiest doll for sure,” someone else said.
A fourth fan added: “Carmen your beauty, sensuality and talent are truly exceptional. You have the most beautiful eyes in the world.”

Former Playmate Carmen didn’t stop there, either, as she later stripped to a pair of black undies embellished with glitzy silver studs and a silky bra.
Wrapping her wrists in black leather bracelets, Carmen smouldered for the camera as she let her sleek tresses flow straight down to her waist, baring her pearly whites as she grinned at the lens.

In a series of snaps, she could be seen bending over at the waist in a pair of knee-high leather boots – exposing a hole in her fishnets as she bared her peachy rear to the world.
“Caught in the act,” she cheekily wrote alongside the post.

Anime Expo was full of surprise announcements, but none were as surprising as the announced return of Panty & Stocking with Garterbelt. It has been 12 years since the last Panty & Stocking with Garterbelt anime premiered, although this time it will be helmed by a different studio than the previous installment.

The Panty & Stocking with Garterbelt franchise is a crude, vulgar comedy about two fallen angels who were booted out of heaven for “gross immorality”. Led by their boss and priest Garterbelt, Panty Anarchy and Stocking Anarchy attempt to earn their way back into heaven by exorcising ghosts using their specialized weapons made from their lingerie. However, neither of the Anarchy sisters takes this task seriously.

The 2010 anime was produced by Gainax, known for anime such as Neon Genesis Evangelion, FLCL, and Tengan Toppa Gurren Lagann. Hiroyuki Imaishi, known for working on both Gurren Lagann and PROMARE, directed Panty & Stocking with Garterbelt before leaving Gainax to begin Studio TRIGGER, who will be taking over the series.

The announcement and trailer were revealed during Studio TRIGGER’s 10th Anniversary panel. The trailer, which at this time is still exclusive to Anime Expo and has not been released to the public, has been reported to have the text “NEW PANTY & STOCKING” alongside a quick animation of the Anarchy Sisters.

The anime has been a long time coming, as the project was originally announced by Gianax back in 2016 through a tweet on their website. However, most who were involved in the project left to join Studio TRIGGER, so the project remained in limbo until this year. The announcement tweet showed silhouettes of the angel sisters, with the promise of another announcement to come soon.

It has not yet been confirmed by Studio TRIGGER if this anime will be a sequel to the series or a total reboot. The original English voice actors for both Panty and Stocking responded to tweets announcing the series but have not confirmed whether they will be returning to the franchise or not. It is also not confirmed what staff will be working on the series yet.
