The chaotic beauty of Panty and Stocking with Garterbelt

I make no secret of my love for the weird side of anime, so it shouldn’t surprise anyone that I adore Panty and Stocking with Garterbelt.

It is a show that brings so many of my favourite things together: the gross-out humour of Ren and Stimpy, the cuteness of Powerpuff Girls and the weirdness of Invader Zim. It is clear that the animators had a very specific goal in mind when they were creating the show — and that goal was anarchy.

After finishing up their previous work, the animation team behind Gurren Lagann did what so many overworked and underpaid staff do: they went for a drink. While on a team trip to relax and recover from the gruelling hours that go into creating an anime, they started drinking and began brainstorming about the kind of show they wanted to make next. Those ideas eventually became the basis for Panty and Stocking with Garterbelt.

Inspired by the gross-out, crude humour of Drawn Together and the aesthetic of The Powerpuff Girls as well as the drama of Gossip Girl, the team put together the concept for their new show while drinking at a resort.

What’s on our radar for the spring 2021 anime season? Find out here!

The show would be about two angelic sisters. Both were kicked out of heaven for being more interested in indulging their vices than saving souls and, under the watchful gaze of the immortal reverend Garterbelt, both must earn their way back home by defeating Ghosts in Daten City, a pun on the Japanese word for fallen angel.

It is a simple premise for a show that opens with a poop demon terrorising the city and features two angels using their underwear to fight it. The tone of Panty and Stocking with Garterbelt varies wildly between episodes, with some being straightforward monster-of-the-week format while others build on the overarching plot of the sisters trying to earn their way back into heaven but getting distracted by their love of men and sweet treats.

But then there is also an episode devoted entirely to exploring the fate of semen in a wad of tissue, so the show never tries to keep on track for very long.

The art style for the show varies wildly even within individual episodes. Most of the action is drawn in a flat, early-00s style similar to Powerpuff Girls before shifting to a more mature anime style for the magical girl transformations. When ghosts and demons are defeated, they turn into a puppet in a live-action prop city before exploding. Everything about Panty and Stocking with Garterbelt is intended to be fluid. Every scene lives in its own moment, allowing the animation staff to try new and exciting things.

The dub of Panty and Stocking with Garterbelt is one of the best of the era and features some of the best Funimation regulars of the time. They are clearly having the time of their life as they bring these characters to life. Hearing Chris Ayres, best known for his portrayal of Frieza in Dragon Ball Z Kai, voicing a blue-skinned demon in bondage gear that is trying to unlock the apocalypse with a young man’s erection is a weird sentence to have to type but it works beautifully in the show.

Jamie Marchi and Monica Rial bring the titular sisters to life, and the banter and timing between the two is so perfect it is hard to believe they recorded it in separate studio sessions.

The chaotic joy that comes from Panty and Stocking with Garterbelt is infectious. It is a show that doesn’t care for continuity, killing the main cast in a zombie outbreak in one episode only for them to be perfectly fine in the next.

As soon as you begin to get used to its particular brand of humour and think they are settling into a groove, there is a random music video thrown into the mix. It is a show that insists on doing its own thing at every turn and it is a better anime for the effort.

Aging pervert discovers Panty and Stocking with Garterbelt

A while back, our own Trent Cannon covered the chaotic wonder of Panty and Stocking with Garterbelt, and I was thoroughly intrigued. I was also disappointed to discover that it didn’t appear possible to stream it legally anywhere in Europe, so I made a mental note (and an Amazon Wishlist entry) to pick up the Blu-Ray release “sometime” and check it out.

As it happens, my sister-in-law picked up the Blu-Ray version for me for Christmas, and thus I am now in a position to comment on my first experiences with this marvellously ridiculous animated series.

What. On. Earth.

I’m not entirely sure what I was expecting when I first started watching the show, but it exceeded all expectations, in a variety of different ways But we’ll come back to that — let’s first talk a little about what this show actually is and where it came from, for the benefit of those who are still unfamiliar.

Panty and Stocking with Garterbelt is a Japanese TV series produced by Gainax and localised by Funimation — more on that latter aspect in a moment, because it’s an important part of the overall story. It originally aired between October and December of 2010, and consisted of 13 episodes in total — most of which were split into two discrete segments — plus a standalone special in April of 2011. There was also a manga adaptation that ran between August 2010 and June of 2011.

The origins of Panty and Stocking with Garterbelt are supposedly in a trip that the staff of the anime Gurren Lagann took after finishing that project. While on that trip, the staffers got drunk and openly shared their ideas and opinions with one another — someone somewhere in the mix decided that attempting to make a show with all of these ideas, however ridiculous, would be fun, and thus the concept was born.

Panty and Stocking with Garterbelt is specifically inspired by American adult animation from the ’00s. Hiromi Wakabayashi, the man who initially came up with the idea for the show, specifically cites the oft-forgotten (and excellent) Comedy Central title Drawn Together as a particular inspiration on Panty and Stocking — in conversation with Grant Alexander from Pixar in 2011, he noted that he and his colleagues were watching the show at an American convention and couldn’t believe the explicit things it was getting away with on TV.

“I thought… why don’t we do that?” he pondered. Why not, indeed.

Wakabayashi also noted that he was a big fan of Glee, Gossip Girl and Power Puff Girls, and there are touches of all of these things that you can find in Panty and Stocking with Garterbelt — along with deliberately poking fun at a controversy with Gurren Lagann: a tendency for certain productions to go “off model” between scenes and sometimes between episodes, leading to a very noticeable disparity in visual quality and sometimes even art style.

For the unfamiliar, in 2007, Gainax co-founder Takami Akai stepped down from his position at the company after making negative comments about the popular 2channel online forum, alongside Gainax production staffer Keiko Mimori. Both of them were upset at a seemingly negative response to the premiere of Gurren Lagann from the otaku of 2channel. Notably, according to reports from the time, Akai claimed that reading comments about Gurren Lagann was “like putting [his] face next to an anus and breathing deeply”.

It didn’t stop there, though; after the fourth episode of the anime aired with obvious artistic differences from the first three, there was another wave of negative outcry from otaku — not just on 2channel this time. Speaking with Alexander, Wakabayashi claimed that the “drop in quality” was a deliberate stylistic choice by series director Imaishi in homage to the variable quality of many anime series from earlier years, but no-one quite got the joke in context. So they repeated it in Panty and Stocking with Garterbelt — and it worked a whole lot better there.

Panty and Stocking with Garterbelt follows the misadventures of two fallen angels who — supposedly, anyway — are trying to get their halos back by fighting capital-G Ghosts in Daten City, a limbo-like place somewhere between heaven and hell. Under the watchful eye of the reverend Garterbelt — who, it should probably said, is absolutely no saint himself — they attempt to earn “Heaven Coins” in order to buy their way back into heaven, and thus they take on a wide variety of different challenges.

And I mean different. In the first episode, they’re fighting poo monsters and exploding toilets. In another, they’re fending off the spirits of vengeful sperm and manifestations of eating disorders. In another still, they turn into Transformers and spend an entire episode fighting each other over an absolutely meaningless feud between the pair of them.

The show could easily become a formulaic “monster of the week” format, and at times it…

Kourtney Kardashian and Travis Barker made things official with a grand wedding ceremony and party over the weekend.

Videos taken of the happy couple show Travis kneeling before Kourtney, practicing the age-old tradition of garter removal while she beams at the crowd. Another video shows the pair wrapped in each other’s arms.

Kourtney made many outfit changes that day, opting for a dramatic sequence of ensembles. In the video, she can be seen wearing a black corset top with a sweetheart neckline and thick straps. The TV personality wore the black boned corset over a silky, lingerie-inspired skirt with black lace trim. The star wore black lace gloves up to her forearms and paired them with an equally lacy garter and stocking combo also in black. She wore a black sheer veil in her hair to complete the gothic wedding look.

Travis also wore all-black, opting for a chic suiting moment. The drummer paired the look with his signature black sunglasses and chunky silver chains, sticking to his roots. Both Barker and Kourtney’s shoes are not pictured, but it’s safe to assume their footwear choices are not far off from what they usually wear. Barker often wears black dress shoes or creepers with a subtle platform while Kardashian has been going for black pumps which would be perfect for this look.

Studio Trigger Reveals New Panty & Stocking with Garterbelt Project – News

Original 13-episode series from GAINAX premiered in 2010

The 13-episode anime originally aired in 2010. Funimation released the anime on home video in 2012, 2013, 2014, and 2019.
Hiroyuki Imaishi directed the anime at GAINAX. Geek Fleet was in charge of series composition, and the music featured songs from Teddyloid, Booty Bronx, Taku Takahashi, and more. Atsushi Nishigori was in charge of the character design.
The Gainax West anime studio had teased a new project for the anime in 2016, and later revealed a “new product” and exhibition for the franchise.

Why You should Watch The Madness of Panty and Stocking With Garterbelt

As part of their 10 Year Anniversary & Announcement Panel at Anime Expo this weekend, Studio Trigger has announced that they are working on a new anime project for ‘Panty and Stocking With Garterbelt’ (PSG). This announcement took anime fans by surprise. Panty and Stocking was an IP owned by Gainax, Trigger’s predecessor, who hasn’t put out an anime in years.
Yet like an angel from heaven, a new anime dropped from the sky and I am so happy it did. PSG is one of the most bizarre and audacious anime I’ve ever watched and fully captured the spirit of Gainax, one of the most important anime studios of all time. While they’d produce a few more anime after PSG, it was the last project Gainax made that truly had that insane spirit, their final climax. So before this new anime drops, let’s have another at what made the original so great.

What is Panty and Stocking With Gaterbelt?

Panty and Stocking With Garterbelt is a 2010 anime starring Panty and Stocking Anarchy, two fallen angels that have been kicked out of heaven. Why? Well, it probably had something to do with Panty being a sex-obsessed tramp and Stocking being a sweet-obsessed goth.
They now live in Daten City with Gaterbelt, a black priest who totally doesn’t have a thing for bondage and little boys. Together they must work to defeat the many ghosts haunting the city. This in turn will give them heaven coins which will allow the sisters to get back into Paradise if they collect enough.
Along the way, they meet allies in the form of the awkward “geek boy” Brief Rock and Frankenstein Dog-thing Chuck as well as do battle with the demon sisters Scanty and Kneesocks.

And how do they beat these ghosts and demons? Well, they activate their angel forms doing a celestial pole dance which causes their, well, Panty and Stockings to turn into a gun and katanas. These cause the ghosts to turn into stop-motion models, and they blow up.
What Happens in Panty and Stocking With Garterbelt?
So PSG is a pretty weird anime. The first thing you’ll probably notice about the show is the fact that it looks less like an anime and more like a Saturday morning cartoon. The show is set out like one as well with two shorter stories in each 25-minute episode, complete with their own title cards (with references). Each story is completely episodic with little overarching continuity, unlike most anime.

And what happens in the anime? Well, Panty and Stocking obviously beat a few ghosts but there’s also an episode where they beat-up zombies with dildos, one where they and their belongings turn into Transformers and Panty “screws” one of them, and even one where they create a music video with numerous references to famous western bands. All while swearing, making innuendos, and showing copious amounts of T&A along the way.

It’s certainly not for everyone. The show’s over-the-top nature and toilet humor can be outright disgusting at times, like the episode dedicated to Panty picking her nose and orgasming over it. But that’s also why people love it. People loved just how daring it was with its experimental sex-positive nature, a unique blending of anime and Western media, and the intense feeling that the animators are just going whatever the hell they wanted fully shone through.
It should also go without saying that the English dub of PSG is fantastic, one of the best of any anime and that’s in part due to the nature of the show. The English script is able to flavor the dialogue with even more innuendoes and jokes that just aren’t possible in Japanese, making the final product all the more hilarious.
The Last of Gainax

Perhaps this should come as no surprise considering who made Panty and Stocking: Studio Gainax, the same group behind Neon Genesis Evangelion, FLCL, and Gurren Lagann, which was made by the same director Hiroyuki Imaishi. These shows of same the same DNA as PSG: experimental animation and storytelling alongside strange, often over-the-top visuals, particularly during the fight scenes.
They’re also known for their heavy focus on fanservice and the curse of writing extremely strong beginnings, only to finish with weak, rather abrupt endings. A curse that PSG, despite being mostly episodic still falls into.
You can tell though with Gainax it’s always more about the journey rather than the conclusion, the wild gangbang of a journey filled with explosive animation, physics-defying boobs, and even some surprisingly down-to-Earth soul-searching every now and then.
Kill La Kill (2013)
This is something that Gainax’s successor Studio Trigger has continued with works like Kill La Kill, and Promare both of which were also directed by Hiroyuki Imaishi, continuing to take anime to the next level alongside a lot more anime boobs. That being said considering how insane all these shows are, I’ve never seen the pervy parts as super horny as much as I did just adding to the chaos happening on screen.
Imaishi and Trigger even made…

New Panty and Stocking with Garterbelt Anime Announced

Anime Expo 2022 was filled with surprises, one of them was the announcement of a new Panty & Stocking With Garterbelt anime project by Studio Trigger.
During its panel, the studio showed a short sequence and promotional art of the project. Which makes the production official.
This is the first time we had an official “statement” as back in 2016, Studio Gainax teased that something was “coming soon.” However it wasn’t stated if this is a reboot or a continuation of the original anime.
pic.twitter.com/YLSssu4kCL— GAINAX WEST 公式 (@GAINAX_WEST) November 25, 2016
Actually many Gainax staffers that worked on the first Panty & Stocking anime series have gone on to work with Studio Trigger on various projects. These include Director Hiroyuki Imaishi and Character Designer Atsushi Nishigori so it is not a surprise that the studio took control over the upcoming project.
While we don’t have an official release date, we need to admit that this announcement put at ease many fans who were eager to know anything about the series for six long years.
The original series first aired in 2010, with home video releases through 2019. If you are not familiar with it or want to remember old times, you can watch it on Crunchy Roll. https://platform.twitter.com/widgets.js

Studio Trigger Announces New Panty & Stocking with Garterbelt Anime Project

The lewd and crude anime Panty & Stocking, which is about a pair of hot-but-bad-tempered angels up to shenanigans, will be back courtesy of Studio Trigger.
The studio that’s known for a ton of great shows like Gurren Lagann and Little Witch Academia will be working on a new project for the Panty & Stocking with Garterbelt franchise. The teaser video shown at Anime Expo 2022 had both characters Panty and Stocking posing with both their middle fingers up. No release date or year has been announced yet.
The 13-episode anime originally aired in 2010. So yeah, that’s a 12+ year long wait before all this happened. Of course, we don’t know whether the project is a 13-episode anime or a film, but in any case fans of Studio Trigger and crazy-ass anime featuring two heroines(?) should pay attention to any sort of development regarding this.

New Panty & Stocking with Garterbelt Reveal Was Anime Expo’s Biggest Surprise – Otaku USA Magazine

New Panty & Stocking with Garterbelt Reveal Was Anime Expo’s Biggest Surprise

by Joseph Luster
July 6, 2022

A lot went down during Anime Expo 2022 over the weekend, but of all the reveals no one saw coming, the biggest had to have been at Trigger’s panel. On hand at the panel were Trigger’s Hiromi Wakabayashi and Yoh Yoshinari, and they were joined by Saya Elder and Bartosz Sztybor of CD PROJEKT RED to primarily focus on Cyberpunk: Edgerunners. That project is coming to Netflix this September, and those of us in the audience got a chance to check out the first episode in English-dubbed form.
The Hiroyuki Imaishi-directed Edgerunners started and ended explosively, and it definitely builds to something that’s going to be worth watching when it drops. Even if all we get out of the series is the Franz Ferdinand-led opening movie, that’s quite enough.

While we didn’t get too much in the way of new info, Trigger also took a moment to share a video of director Akira Amemiya hyping up the upcoming SSSS.GRIDMAN and SSSS.DYNAZENON movie, saying he looks forward to getting an Academy Award for it. The real show-stopper came, appropriately, at the end, when Trigger gave us a quick look at a project that’s currently in the works. The very first frame of the teaser sent the audience in a frenzy as it unveiled more Panty & Stocking with Garterbelt.
The original Panty & Stocking with Garterbelt anime aired from October 2010 to December 2010, with Hiroyuki Imaishi (Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann, PROMARE) directing at Gainax prior to leaving to help found Trigger. All we know at this time is that there’s more on the way, so we’ll have to stay tuned for additional information. Judging from the reaction in the packed main hall at Anime Expo, fans are as ready as they’ll ever be.
If the news had you wanting to revisit the series or watch it for the first time, it’s all available on Crunchyroll. Here’s the official synopsis of this buckwild show:
Panty and Stocking are obscene angels who were banished from the pearly gates for being foul-mouthed, sex-crazed, sugar-addicted bad girls! Now they spend their days hunting ghosts in the lecherous abyss between Heaven and Earth.

Panty & Stocking With Garterbelt Season 2 revealed by Studio Trigger

Studio Trigger revealed a season 2 for Panty & Stocking With Garterbelt at its Anime Expo 2022 panel on July 2, as reported by @VamptVo. A new project was technically announced in 2016, but since then without news. The reveal included a short trailer that should be officially uploaded soon.

Why Anime Fans Are Hyping for the Panty & Stocking Sequel
Produced by Gainax and directed by Hiroyuki Imaishi (Kill La Kill), Panty & Stocking With Garterbelt first aired from October 1 to December 24, 2010. both at the command of Garterbelt, an Afro priest.

DUALSHOCKERS VIDEO OF THE DAYPanty & Stocking is an over-the-top series that goes way further into eccentricity than the typical Gainax series FLCL, Abenobashi or Gurren Lagann. It’s pretty hard to describe what made Panty & Stocking unforgettable for those who didn’t experience it. The series mixed in different gimmicks or sometimes a completely different approach to animation. TeddyLoid’s original electric soundtrack was also one of the strongest points of the series.
Personally I think it was an unbalanced series where certain episodes or scenes were much more memorable than others. In the now-dated era of anime blogs, a certain Kurogane once summed up Panty & Stocking With Garterbelt as “too experimental even for Gainax”, and I still agree 12 years later.
That being said, Panty & Stocking is definitely worth watching as long as you don’t mind his crude humor and imagery. If you like Studio Trigger and Imaishi stuff, and if you like Studio Trigger’s more niche and experimental series like Turning Girls or Inferno Cop, I’m sure you’ll love Panty & Stocking.

A brief history of the studio trigger and its Gainax origins
Panty And Stocking With Garterbelts director Hiroyuki Imaishi left Gainax with several other members in 2011 to found Studio Trigger. These included Panty & Stocking screenwriter Masahiko Otsuka and producer Kazuya Masumoto. After losing most of his talent, Gainax has done little since then but still held the rights to the series.
The situation finally changed in 2020 when Studio Trigger secured the rights to Panty And Stocking With Garterbelt and Gurren Lagann and has now officially announced more PSG. This is an incredibly exciting announcement and a dream come true for anime fans who have followed the medium since the late 2000s. I can’t wait to see what this new anime will be like.
As a side note, Studio Trigger also has a Twitch channel that you should check out.
