Gainax’s PANTY AND STOCKING WITH GARTERBELT Sets A New Standard In ADD Editing.
How manic is the first trailer for Gainax’s Panty And Stocking With Garterbelt – a series described over at Anime Nation as “Powerpuff Girls with sex”? So manic that I do believe it could actually cause ADD in those who watch it. Guh. This actually appeared last week but I was so caught up with Toronto Film Festival preparations that I didn’t actually look at it until now, while procrastinating from writing yet another TIFF film review. But I digress. The art actually looks quite fun but, good lord do I ever hope they tone down the editing. Check it below.

Crunchyroll announced a slew of new streaming acquisitions this week, with a handful of new series from Kadokawa Pictures and TV Tokyo.
Among the Kadokawa titles is the latest series from Gainax, the hyperkinetic Panty & Stocking with Garterbelt (trailer below). More from their fresh lineup includes Sora no Otoshimono Forte and Fortune Arterial. All three will stream the same day as their airing in Japan.
TV Tokyo also has three fresh shows to add to their long list of returning acts. Masahiro Anbe’s Squid Girl and Tamiki Wakaki’s The World God Only Knows are brand spanking new, and Hiroyuki Asada’s Tegami Bachi: Letter Bee is coming back after a six-month hiatus. Like Kadokawa’s titles, these will all run as simulcasts.

Panty & Stocking with Garterbelt
by Joseph Luster
October 5, 2010
So it appears that—surprise, surprise—the latest series from Gainax is one of the more divisive additions to the fall anime season. That outcome was likely predicted by most the moment the first trailer aired for Panty & Stocking with Garterbelt, a series as dependent on “wild and zany” anime antics as it is the American cartoon styling it liberally dumps into the mix.
As if to highlight this intentionally low-brow excursion right off the bat, the first half-episode’s plot deals with a horrendous plague we all fear on a daily basis: people getting sucked into their toilets. This messy fate is guaranteed from the outset to befall one of our two heroines at some point, whether it be the sexed-out Panty or the sweets-craving Stocking. Whatever or whoever’s behind it, the two will no doubt take them out extravagantly, with the help of fro’d-out bossman Garterbelt and the Jhonen Vasquez-yoinked Gir clone, Chuck.
Cue shameless barf, crap and sex gags, along infrequent bursts of over the top rubberband animation that fits the concept like a glove. What, did you expect any sense of shame from a show called Panty & Stocking with Garterbelt? If not, you’re in for a treat, because director Hiroyuki Imaishi (Dead Leaves, Gurren Lagann) pulls out a lot of his stylistic tricks here, mixing different animation techniques to create the kind of referential Gainax hodge-podge that’s worth watching just to see where they’ll take it next.
The first real taste of this multi-flavored concoction comes when Panty and Stocking go into their “transformation”—Panty’s undies become a gun, Stocking’s stocking lashes out in electric blue sword slashes—and our heroines jump into lovingly rendered and fetishistically drawn-out stripper pole gyrations out of nowhere. There are a few other switch-ups, both hilarious and head-scratching in turn, but it wouldn’t do to spoil them all here.
The first episode of Panty & Stocking with Garterbelt is anything but dull. As the look of the show would lead one to believe, it borrows aspects of American cartoons—especially those that have aired on Cartoon Network over the years—that extend well beyond the seemingly innocent snatching of one particular character design. The format of shows like Powerpuff Girls is utilized nicely, splitting the show in twain to facilitate two back-to-back bite-sized stories.
Fans of Gainax and, more specifically, Imaishi should definitely give the show a spin. It’s a little Dead Leaves, a little Invader Zim, and a little stupid in an entertaining way. I’d be a little concerned with how well the show would hold up over a full season, but 13 episodes sounds just about right for what this is.
Panty & Stocking with Garterbelt is available streaming via Crunchyroll.

Panty & Stocking with Garterbelt Review
Panty & Stocking with GarterbeltStudio: GainaxPublisher: FUNimationFormat: DVDRelease Date: July 10, 2012Price: $64.98 – Available HereOverview:There are very few anime which don’t take themselves seriously and even fewer of these titles end up being released in North America. Sometimes when these anime are brought overseas, they are adjusted for the audience, similar to how FUNimation took Shin Chan, which was primarily a children’s show and turned it into a raunchy riot full of pop culture references and more.On the other hand, FUNimation’s most recent release, Panty & Stocking with Garterbelt, or better known simply as Panty & Stocking, doesn’t need any special adjustments. Instead, FUNimation has brought forth perhaps one of the foulest mouthed anime to come out of Japan and they have done so in uncensored form, giving the actors free reign with their dialogue. Does Panty & Stocking contain enough wrong to make it so right for your money?Story:Daten City lies between the border of Heaven and Hell and because of its unfortunate location, the city is always plagued by evil spirits that take the form of various ghosts. The ghosts can come in all shapes and sizes and can cause mass chaos and destruction whenever they form. However the citizens of the city are not on their own, as two angels reside in the city under the eye of the local priest. Now if only one of them could stop having sex with anything that moves while the other is too busy eating anything sweet. These two angels, called the Anarchy sisters are Panty and Stocking. They have been kicked out of Heaven due to the fact that their behavior is unbecoming of a heavenly being. To try and buy their way back into heaven they must destroy any ghosts they come across and receive Heaven Coins by making them “repent.” These two are monitored by an over the top priest named Garterbelt and are accompanied by their… pet like creature named Chuck. Now while this may sound like a relatively simple story all on its own, that promises chances at redemption and plenty of action, it is far from it. The reason for this is simply because Panty & Stocking really never takes itself seriously as a show, thus creating some of the most off the wall and unpredictable antics viewers will likely ever see.Panty is a nymphomaniac who would be much happier spending her time sleeping with four guys at once, while Stocking is a glutton for sweets who happens to love bondage, which seems to be trait shared with the priest Garterbelt. Throughout the series these two angels act like anything but angels, often causing more damage than the ghosts themselves, all while swearing like sailors. With this off the wall style, there is pretty much zero continuity between episodes barring a minor closing story arc. Instead the story mostly follows a monster of the week type style with the Anarchy sisters screwing and eating anything that moves, then fighting against whatever adversary pops up to stop their fun. But you know what? This formula and style work perfectly when combined together, creating an unpredictable laugh-riot of a show that will be impossible to forget.Visuals:Interestingly enough, Gainax began creating Panty & Stocking with a style similar to what they had called “American Animation” and then ran with a rather simplistic looking art style that featured the characters appearing with slightly pointy character models. However the art style found in Panty & Stocking changes abruptly from time to time, either dropping in quality to an even more simplistic style which appears to be mocking “chibi” comedy moments.Along these same lines there are a number of times that the animation will take a drastic turn for the better, such as during transformation scenes, where the artwork will become extremely detailed and high in quality. While shifting in quality like this would usually be a detriment for a series, Panty & Stocking makes it feel like these shifts are also part of the series’ jokes.Audio:As standard with a FUNimation release, Panty & Stocking with Garterbelt does contain the original Japanese voice track for those who would prefer it, though all of the rolled R’s and Japanese voice actors swearing in English can’t compare to what FUNimation has done with the English dub of the show.Panty is voiced by Jamie Marchi while Monica Rial is handling the voice of Stocking and hearing these two go at one another and saying their outrageous lines is absolutely wonderful. Each voice actor has done a stellar job bringing these characters to life, and this praise doesn’t just end at the main characters. Even Colleen ClinkenBeard, Scanty’s voice, Cherami Leigh, Kneesocks’ voice, and Garterbelt’s voice actor Christopher Sabat have outdone themselves with this raunchy show. The stellar voice acting of the series is accompanied by some stellar music as well. While Panty & Stocking may feature a rather simple opening song, the ending song “Fallen…

Review: Panty & Stocking With Garterbelt
Over the years, anime fans reveled in hypotheticals about American properties. Questions of how Japan would handle shows like Dexter’s Laboratory and Powerpuff Girls became staples of conversations, regardless of the fact that Japanese productions of American cartoons were fairly common in the 1980s. In 2010, Gainax decided to indulge such a possibility with Panty & Stocking With Garterbelt, a series that twists, molds, and molests the very hallmarks that exist in American animation.Daten City is a metropolis nestled between the borders of Heaven and Hell. It’s an urban jungle, the churches are shuttered and the idea of morality seems to escape the populous. Countless citizens try to eke out a living, though many let out their last gasps with crushing regrets. The build-up of negative energy is so severe that ghosts are beginning to manifest, in order to extract their revenge on the very citizens that wronged people in life. Be it the plumbers who overworked to the point that they drowned in their latest job, the spurned prom queens, or the foodies that constantly hungered for one more bite. In this city of sin, the only hope for the innocent rests in the hands of the church.Garterbelt is Daten City’s afro-sporting missionary, who recently took an angelic pair of sisters under his wing. These girls aren’t the typical halo-sporting, harp-strumming visions of religion that one would expect, though. They were both expelled from heaven for their lewd, crude behavior and their insatiable vices. As a punishment, the two must pay their way back into heaven by cleaning the unholy filth that litters the streets of Daten City. For each ghost busted, the girls will earn “Heaven Coins”, which they can use to buy their way back into the beyond. Through their punishment, Garterbelt will serve a dual role as mentor and motivator for the girls, as he tries to point them on the path to salvation. He’ll have his work cut out for him, though, since the girls seem more than happy to live sinfully decadent lives, Daten City be damned! At first glance, there really seems to be little to get excited about. The cast is comprised of a gaggle of unlikable bitches and stereotypes, who exist to play through shallow, often borderline stupid plotlines. The dialogue is littered with toilet humor and four-letter words, to the point that one begins to wonder if the show was written by a room full of sixth graders. Visual comedy is hit-or-miss, and any real character development is effectively erased by the end of each episode. In short, this seems like it should be a black hole of content, where clever ideas march out to die. It’s a bizarre mish-mash of concepts that simply shouldn’t fit together that, by most metrics, would normally have viewers running for the doors and calling for the blood of those who would dare unleash such an abomination upon the world. And yet, somehow, the show manages to work despite these shortcomings.Panty & Stocking is a difficult series to give a definitive commentary on, due to its bipolar nature. The show varies wildly in quality between episodes. The higher quality installments are packed with witty dialogue, sharp writing, and clever jokes, and are an absolute joy to watch. These include episodes like Transhomers, a brilliant parody of the 1980s Transformers TV show, that lovingly recreates (and pokes fun at) the plots and visual styles of the ’80s classic, and Of The Dead, a hilarious homage to the old zombie flicks like Dawn of the Dead that features some fun wordplay, clever visual jokes, and incredibly clever uses of a motorized marital aid.Yes, that’s Stocking rocking the G1 Transformers style. You may now weep for your precious childhood.Unfortunately, for every good episode, there seems to be an equally bad counterpart. Episodes like Ghost: The Phantom of Daten City and Excretion Without Honor nor Humanity are the very embodiment horrible television. These are the episodes that not only exhibit, but magnify the show’s many flaws. These episodes place a damper any the excitement that the rest of the series manages to generate.Visually, Panty & Stocking is unlike anything to come from Japan. The show takes numerous cues from a number of American cartoons, with characters that look as if they belong in the worlds of Powerpuff Girls or Invader Zim. English onomotopoeas like fly across the screen, in a clever nod to the campy 1960s Batman TV series, and episode title cards are based on popular American films like Raiders of the Lost Ark and 12 Angry Men. At key points, the series breaks from its American-inspired motif to deliver short cuts of the Angel Sisters in a over-beautified Japanese format. It’s jarring, but it certainly works in the context of the show itself. The show’s musical elements are fairly bland and forgettable, outside of an insert track titled Help! We Are Angels. This catchy synth-rock tune embodies what the show itself aims to be. It’s catchy, it’s…

PANTY AND STOCKING WITH GARTERBELT, Now With Holes and Runs Fixed!
Back in august I reviewed the Manga UK DVD release of Panty and Stocking with Garterbelt, the cheeky and VERY funny Japanese animation series about two angels stuck on Earth who have to use their transforming undergarments to fight demons.
Unfortunately, that release was badly marred by a mastering error on the third disc, which therefore missed a minute of every one of the last few episodes. Manga UK did the right thing, recalled the whole batch, and provided replacement discs, even actively alerting people to contact them.
I loved this release. The series itself is goofy fun and the documentary extras on this disc are awesome, amongst the best I’ve seen released this year. My review concluded with:
“…All in all I really recommend checking out these discs. I had an almost illegal amount of fun with them.”
And in that review I also promised to give a shout when this title was once again being traded by the two largest online distributor chains of the UK, being play.com and our affiliate Amazon.co.uk. That happened earlier this week, so this is the shout: you can now again safely order this DVD-release and be guaranteed to get the correct, fixed version.

Panty & Stocking with Garterbelt Blu-ray Review
Panty & Stocking with GarterbeltStudio: GainaxPublisher: FUNimationFormat: Blu-rayRelease Date: January 15, 2013Price: $69.98 – Available HereOverview:Every company is concerned about losing money to competition, especially competition from overseas. This fear has recently caused quite a stir in the anime industry thanks to the fact that many Japanese companies are either afraid to sell the license to Western companies to release in English or make it so certain versions of an anime are delayed.Such is the case with Panty & Stocking, an anime which was originally released on DVD back in July. The original license holder feared that anime fans from Japan would purchase the Blu-ray version of the anime for a severe discount from North America. As such, FUNimation’s Blu-ray release was delayed until the beginning of 2013. However now that the series has debuted on Blu-ray, is it worth picking up for those who may have waited or are looking for the ultimate Panty & Stocking experience?Story:Daten City lies between the border of Heaven and Hell and because of its unfortunate location, the city is always plagued by evil spirits that take the form of various ghosts. The ghosts can come in all shapes and sizes and can cause mass chaos and destruction whenever they form. However the citizens of the city aren’t on their own, as two angels reside in the city under the eye of the local priest. The reason for this is simply because Panty & Stocking really never takes itself seriously as a show as the angels are more focused on sex and candy, thus creating some of the most off the wall and unpredictable antics viewers will likely ever see.Panty is a nymphomaniac who would be much happier spending her time sleeping with four guys at once, while Stocking is a glutton for sweets who happens to love bondage, which seems to be trait shared with the priest Garterbelt. Throughout the series these two angels act like anything but angels, use their stockings and panties as weapons, often cause more damage than the ghosts themselves, all while swearing more than most people do in a year. This formula and style work perfectly when combined together, creating an unpredictable laugh-riot of a show that will be impossible to forget.Visuals:To say that Panty & Stocking with Garterbelt received an upgrade by being released on Blu-ray rather than DVD would be an understatement. The reason for this is thanks to the fact that Gainax’s bright color palette and mostly simplistic art style shine on this Blu-ray release. You see, while the DVDs may have still looked impressive, the series has never looked better than it does now on Blu-ray.Even the most basic sequences appear crisp and vibrant and whenever the art style changes into one with more detail, these crisp visuals never miss a beat as the entire series, minus one half of an episode which features a real-life type art style, impresses from start to finish, especially whenever these two angels battle. While fans may be satisfied with the DVD portrayal of the series, this Blu-ray offering is the definitive Panty & Stocking experience.Audio:As standard with a FUNimation release, Panty & Stocking with Garterbelt does contain the original Japanese voice track for those who would prefer it, though all of the rolled R’s and Japanese voice actors swearing in English can’t compare to what FUNimation has done with the English dub of the show.Panty is voiced by Jamie Marchi while Monica Rial is handling the voice of Stocking and hearing these two go at one another and saying their outrageous lines is absolutely wonderful.
